Helios Binoculars

Helios Binoculars

Helios Binoculars Brand is a registered British binoculars brand for sports optics. Helios has been around for over five decades and has amassed one of the best following in the UK. However, in the US, the brand is fairly unknown since they are also hard to find.

Today, the company is established as a household brand and produces a number of products at a fair price. Some of the products that the Helios Brand produces today include:

  • Binoculars
  • Telescopes
  • Monocular
  • Spotting scopes
  • Camera Adapters
  • Mountings
  • Tripod adapters

Personally, I didn’t quite know anything about them until I got several requests from my UK readers to review them. That’s when I contacted the licensed UK distributors and requested to review some of their models. Luckily, they accepted and here we are.

Helios Binocular Range

Helios Brand makes a huge range of top rated binoculars. Their binocular models range from the pocket size models to the huge astronomical set of binoculars.

Helios Binoculars models incorporate the use of the Back-4 prism and also the broad-band multicoated lenses. Helios Binoculars also make use of the Porro Prism and Roof Prism in several of its binocular models.

Even so, the prices are still very affordable. Currently, there are many Helios binocular models that are available in the market. The models in their design quality and also in several other features such as:

  • Lens capacity
  • Magnification
  • Depth of field
  • Size
  • Weight
  • Dimensions

Nonetheless, Helios Binoculars can easily be divided into the quality of make and the price. Even so, the prices are often dependent on the quality of design.

Thankfully, Helios binoculars are still the compact models that provide one of the best long range magnifications for its users. They come in reasonable prices and are quite popular with their Helios Observation binocular.

Helios binoculars now offer an array of products, which are best for any type of optic lover including the beginners, intermediates, and pro users. These binoculars are also ideal for different budgets.

Helios Quantum Observation Binoculars

The Helios Quantum Observation Binoculars is the flagship model for this brand. It is a high-end binocular with an absolutely stylish and sleek design. The series features three models of the best observation binoculars.

From the price, design, to finishing, Helios Quantum binocular oozes nothing buy class and sophistication. That’s how you can tell that it is a valuable buy.

First, Helios Quantum features a top-quality waterproofing and fog proofing technology. It is designed also designed with an individual helical eyepiece focusing, which is a vital addition for the best rangefinders.

The helical eyepiece focusing is used for the medium-to-long-range astronomical observations and will also work for terrestrial applications.

More importantly, is the incorporating of the oversized BAK-4 prisms together with the fully broadband multi-coated optical technology.

This combination is best for any person that’s looking to gather enough light through the lenses and to enjoy crystal clear view.

One thing that I was amazed by was the high quality triplet objective lenses. These lenses provided a semi-apochromatic high-end optical performance.

When combined with the 45° angled eyepieces, they offer an excellent versatility for any form of viewing more specifically for terrestrial and also astronomical viewing.

The best part is, the eyepieces are removable and you can easily replace them with the standard 1.25” eyepieces of any brand. This makes the binoculars some of the best astronomical eyepieces with an additional cutting edge technology.

Helios Quantum uses the U-Fork mount, which is specially designed for astronomical uses. This type of mounting enables you to angle the binoculars upwards for an even higher altitude

Here are other features that the Quantum has.

  • Built-in lens hoods
  • Finderscope shoe
  • Carrying handle
  • All-metal construction
  • Heavy-duty hardwood tripod
  • Foam-lined carrying case

Helios LightQuest-HR Series Binoculars

Helios LightQuest-HR Series Binoculars is the latest series Helios optics. The new top-rated binocular is an observation binocular.

It combines some of the top features from several Helios brand models to maximize its mechanical and optical technology.

From my tests, this binocular enjoys one of the best design technologies with an incredible performance to match it!

Waterproof

Helios LightQuest-HR Series are fully waterproof. They use the IPX7 waterproofing standard and allow you to dive in depths of up to 0.5m for 30 minutes.

In addition to that, the binocular is also nitrogen filled. This enables it to give you a fog-free operation.

Individual Eyepiece (IF) Focusing

Another thing that’s unique to this binocular series is their IF focusing technology. This is as good as the center focusing technology. However, in with the IF technology, every lens is focused individually.

The IF is designed for any level of viewing including for the medium-to-long-range terrestrial use.

Magnesium Alloy

Just like with any other high-end models, the LightQuest-HR Series Binoculars is constructed from the magnesium alloy. This makes it extremely lightweight but also very sturdy. It is durable and will beat most regular optics of its size.

To maintain a robust structure, the body is again covered in stylish yet protective rubber armor too.

BaK-4 prisms

In addition to these, this series also features the use of the high-index BaK-4 prisms. The high-end glass, therefore, guarantees the best clarity. It also boasts of the fully multi-coated optical lenses

Caged Prisms

The prisms are also caged to prevent any form of shake and instead guarantee a good level of extra shock resistance.

High Resolution

The binocular is also a high-resolution optical system that features a high-transmission lens and high-end prism coatings. All these are superior and will allow for a massive light transmittance of over 90%.

The best thing about the lens coatings here is that they have an extremely low reflectivity levels. This ensures that you get maximum amounts of light inside your lens through the bin’s eyepiece.

Eventually, the images that this binocular will deliver are vibrant and extremely flat from one edge to the next edge. In short they will be free of any distortion.

Additional features that the Helios LightQuest-HR Series Binoculars comes with are:

  • Fold-down rubber eyecups
  • Adjustable integral tripod mounting
  • Central stabilizing bar
  • Eyepiece rain-guard

NOTE: In this design, there are oversized eye lens elements that guarantee comfortable viewing and the best corrected images.

Helios Apollo Series Binoculars

Helios Apollo Series Binoculars are not as pricey as the Quantum Models. However, they are also very reliable observation bins. Apollo series have several models with multiple configurations to choose from and every model is a high resolution bin.

Nonetheless, the best part about this series is their cool features that enable them to compete with some of the finest models from other brands.

Waterproof

All Apollo Helios Models have quality waterproofing ability. They are also nitrogen purged binoculars and have greater resistance to fog and extreme weather conditions.

Individual eyepiece (IF) focusing

The Apollos incorporate the individual eyepiece (IF) focusing technology. This is operates differently from the center focus system.

Every eyepiece is focused independently. The IF designed is best medium-to-long-range astronomical observations and that’s why the Apollo model is an awesome observation bin.

Metallic Armor

Like the Quantum, Apollo models also use a robust design that incorporates all-metal body armor. The metallic body construction is highly durable. It costs so much to produce and is often found on high-end bins only.

BAK-4 Prisms

BAK-4 Prisms have also been used to maximize the clarity of the view.  It works with a fully multi-coated optical system.

Together, these two guarantee a higher-resolution with top optical features. High-transmission lenses are also incorporated.

With the prism coatings this combination allows for a higher light transmittance of up to 92% for the Apollo brands.

Additional Highlights

The Helios Apollo series produces a flat field and distortion-free bright images. They have an exotic eyepiece technology that features oversized elements.

This is good for long eye-relief and better view. Nonetheless, they also have fold-down rubber eyecups that fit every spectacle-wearer.

In addition to that, this series also features the tripod mounting bush just as the Quantum. It has threaded eyepiece units that will seamlessly accept standard the 1.25” light-filters.

The finish is a stylish Black Rubber coating and the carry-in case is designed from foam-lined aluminum.

Helios Stellar-II Series Binoculars

Like Apollo, the Helios Stellar-II Series Binoculars has a high quality construction. It is nitrogen filled observation binoculars. All the binocular models in this class are waterproof.

The binoculars employ the individual eyepiece (IF) focusing technology same as the Apollo series. The IF is designed for any type of observation including the medium-to-long-range terrestrial observations.

Like Quantum, Helios Stellar-II is fully waterproof. It has the IPX7 standard waterproofing technology that allows you to dive into 1m depths for about 30 minutes.

Combined with the waterproofing technology, the nitrogen filled technology can also withstand the extreme weather conditions. It is good at giving you a fog-free operation and unaltered viewing.

More importantly, this bin also incorporates robust magnesium alloy armor for the body but with a lightweight construction.

It is covered in stylish and protective black rubber armor, which is not only sleek but also resistant to dents in case of a fall.

Here are other feature highlights of the Helios Stellar-II Series Binoculars that you can always rely on.

  • BaK-4 prisms
  • Fully multi-coated optical lenses
  • Integral tripod mounting ability
  • Central stabilizing bar

Helios Lightwing HR Binoculars

The Helios Lightwing HR Binoculars is one of the mid-priced binocular models from Helios. The Lightwing HR series comprises six models. These models have some conspicuous features that are common to some of the top-rated brands.

Objective Lens

The models use either 32mm objective lenses or the 42mm objective lenses. Larger lenses allow the Lightwing HR series to gather in more light. Eventually, they are able to translate into better images especially when the loss of light is controlled.

Extra low Dispersion

In addition to that, the Helios Lightwing HR models also come with the high end ED (Extra low Dispersion) glasses. The ED glasses are patented to the 42mm models in this category. This is why these models are common to guys who want the high-end observation binos.

Phase Corrected BaK-4 prisms

Another vital optical feature that the Lightwing HR series use is the phase corrected BaK-4 prisms. This one is common throughout the series.  The prisms are ideal for providing the best clarity on images.

Fully Multi Coated Optics

In addition to that, this series also uses the high-grade optical glass. The glass is fully multi-coated, which means that every surface of the lens is coated.

This provides these binoculars with one of the best image qualities. The FMC coatings boost the prism’s ability to reflect maximum light and in turn guarantee the best visibility under any type of weather condition.

Dielectric Coatings

Notably, Helios Lightwing HR models prisms are also Di-Electric coated. This type of coating is the best. Due to this, they are very hard to develop. Even so, di-electric coating maximizes transmittance and that’s why they are common only to the high-end bins are.

Di-electric coatings play a huge role in showing users that a binocular is of high quality, better transmittance, and ranks higher than regular silver coatings.

Fully Sealed

The bodies of the Helios Lightwing HR series are also fully sealed. They are made from the Magnesium alloy, which is again common to high-end binocular designs. In addition to that, the binoculars also come with thin rubber armouring.

Other Features

Apart from the above, the Lightwing HR series also enjoys additional features. These features include:

  • Hard carry-on casing
  • Waterproof technology
  • 5 year warranty

NOTE: When I tested the models from the Lightwing HR series, I fell in love with the 8×42 ED models. They deliver stunning images and offer a wide field of view. They are compact and did not hurt my wrists at all.

Helios Aero-ED Binoculars

Unlike the Lightwing HR series that has six models, the Helios Aero-ED Binoculars consist of only two models.

It has the 10×42 and 8×42 models. The models are also powerful and enjoy some of the best features any modern binoculars should have. They are the value buy and will guarantee the best value for your money.

Extra low Dispersion Glass

The ED (Extra low Dispersion) glass like we saw in the Lightwing models helps to eliminate color fringing.

Phase correction coatings

These binoculars are roof prism binoculars with Phase correction coatings. They use the Bak-4 prisms and fully multi-coated optics. This maximizes the transmittance rate and also the clarity of the image under the field or view.

O-ring Sealed

More importantly, these bins have also incorporated the O-ring sealed technology. The technology ensures that the binoculars remain waterproof at all times.

In addition to that, Aero-ED Binoculars also use nitrogen purging in their lenses that prevent any form of internal fogging.

Open-Hinge Bridge

Unlike the regular bins that use single bridge systems, Aero-ED Binoculars series use the open bridge technology. This type of technology is what the premium binoculars are using right now.

The open bridge construction is easy to handle. You can focus it and hold it with just one hand at any time.

Magnesium Body

Aero-ED Binoculars from Helios also uses the rubber armored light weight magnesium alloy casing. This type of casing is only reserved for most high-end binocular models. It offers the best protection against:

  • Falls
  • Harsh weather
  • Scratches
  • Dents
  • Breakages

Both the two Aero ED models also come with the neck-strap and case for easy carrying and transportation.

Typically, only the premium binos will come with readily available spare parts and also accessories. So for the two Aero ED models to come with additional carry-on bag is a big plus for the buyer.

NOTE: Considering the low price that Aero ED models come with, this is an impressive offer. That’s why when I tested them I instantly realized that this was the class for anyone who needs an impressive bin at an affordable price.

Helios NatureSport Binoculars Series

Under the Helios NatureSport Binoculars Series, there are three basic models. These three models are all porro prism models. All the models feature stylish and soft natural rubber technology.

NatureSport Focus Free

The first model is the NatureSport Focus Free Model. It is designed by normal styling with twist-up eyecups for every spectacle wearers and a tripod adaptor bush.

This model requires no focusing at all, which makes it an extremely easy-to-use binocular. It is highly realistic and you can use it to view any moving object easily.

We tried it with horse racing and it worked really well. The same happened when we subjected it to a game of soccer.

Nonetheless, being a general-purpose binocular doesn’t make it as powerful as the Quantum. On the contrary, this binocular won’t still focus as closely as the center-focus model would.

It uses the BK7 prisms and fully coated optics. The model has an integral tripod bush with fold-down rubber eyecups.

NatureSport Zoom

Apart from NatureSport, this model is the next. It is a zoom binocular set that’s design and styled with a slight upgraded from the model above. It has and an oversized eye-lens with a great close-focus.

 NatureSport Plus

Finally, there is the NatureSport Plus model with highly advanced features. The features include the following:

  • Premium quality BaK-4 prisms
  • Multi-coated optics
  • Oversized eye-lenses
  • Long-eye relief

There is also the incorporation of the twist-up eyecups for every spectacle wearer. In addition to that is a tripod adaptor bush, neck strap and case, and a black rubber casing.

Available Models

  • Helios NatureSport 7X50 Focus Free Binoculars
  • Helios NatureSport 8-20X50 Zoom Binoculars
  • Helios NatureSport Plus Binoculars

Nature Plus Helios has three different models. They include the 7×50 Plus, 8x40WA Plus, and the 10x50WA Plus.

Helios Nirvana-ED Binoculars

The third category is of the Helios Brand is the Helios Nirvana-ED Binoculars. This series is also available two configurations. It comes in the 10×42 and 8×42 models.

The Helios Nirvana-ED roof prism has a number of cool features too. The binoculars use the multi-coated optics lenses that maximize clarity on the final image.

However, they are not fully multi-coated which means that some surfaces are left un-coated. But I am guessing that half a loaf of bread is better than none.

In addition to that, they also use the phase correction coatings on top of the BaK-4 prisms technology.

Gauging from their name, you will also realize that the Nirvana-ED Binoculars uses the extra low dispersion (ED) glass. The ED glass is a common technology to the high-end binocular models.

It helps to enhance the color fidelity and eliminates any form of fringing. More importantly, these two models are also very durable.

Thanks to the rubber coated magnesium alloy body armor. This armor is not only strong but also pretty light. It allows you to handle the binoculars for longer without experiencing any form of fatigue whatsoever.

Again, the Nirvana-ED binoculars series are filled with the argon gas. This is another technology that works for the best water-proofing and fog-proofing technology.

The models are highly reliable. They use the center-focusing technology in form of a central knurled knob. The wheel uses the click-stop dioptric adjustment for an easy focusing ability.

Finally, these two binoculars are tripod adaptable and both models also come with an inclusive neck-strap and case in their package.

Why Not Fully Multi Coated?

At the beginning, I mentioned that the Helios Binocular range is best categorized using two parameters, the price and quality.

If the price is low, the quality is not necessarily low. However, you might miss out on some features while other features might be down-graded.

This is often necessary because the cost of production for high-end features is normally high. Higher cost of production means higher price for the binocular.

The use of Fully Multi-Coated Lenses also means more cost of production. But since the bin is priced affordably, it is better to skip some lens surfaces and meet a much more important need.

NOTE: O-ring sealing, magnesium armors, and BaK-4 prisms are still technologies used in top-rated bins.

Available Models

Helios Mistral WP6 Binoculars

One thing I forgot to mention is this. Helios has a good collection of the best low costing range of binoculars.

Helios Mistral WP6 Binoculars Series is another one of these top rated low cost binoculars.  The Mistral WP6 series from Helios consists of 10 models.

They feature the mid-sized 32mm binocular sets, standard 42mm objective lens models, and a few other 50mm large objective lens binocular.

These varied bins come in several other magnifications powers and are not restricted as many might think.

The series are affordable and looks to address the general uses of a binocular. They are best for birding, safari, wildlife watching. However, the hunters will not find this series to be adequate as it comes with no range-finder.

This is another model from the Apollo series. However, it is slightly different from the above options. The 7X50 Apollo binocular is precisely a marine use.

It is a high quality nitrogen filled waterproof binocular for easy observation. The design technology supports an individual eyepiece (IF) focusing mechanism.

The binocular is best for marine use because it has a large objective lens. A large objective lens diameter makes it ideal for low lit terrestrial observations. Thanks to the ability of the large lens to gather more light in dark spaces.

More importantly, the model has a shockproof design that incorporates an all-metal body construction. It is, therefore, very durable.

Notably, it features the high-end BAK-4 prisms with fully multi-coated optical lens. Like the above models, it is a high-resolution binocular that also has high-transmission lens and ideal prism coatings for over 92% transmittance capacity.

The exotic eyepiece is designed with oversized elements and a long eye-relief. The images you get are flat from one edge to the next and are free from any distortion.
