Athlon Cronus Binoculars

The Athlon Cronus Series is the top-of-the-chain binocular from Athlon Sports Optics. This flagship series currently comes in two models. Every model has the 42mm objective lenses. However, the magnification power differs and stands at 8.5X or 10X.

Being top of the crème, CRONUS offers some of the super quality binocular features and components including:

Field Flattener Lenses

Field Flattener Lenses are designed to provide the needed correction on the field curvature. They help the binocular to maintain a sharp view right from the center to the edges of the FoV.  Athlon refers to their Field Flattener Lenses as the E2ES lens system.

ED (extra-low dispersion glass)

The extra-low dispersion glass technology helps in the reduction of any form of chromatic fringing.

Dielectric Prism Coatings

These special coatings will lead to increased brightness. They will provide better image quality by reflecting more light. Dielectric Prism Coatings are found in high-end optics. They are able to reflect up to 99% of the lighting, which hits them. Athlon refers to them as the ESP Dielectric Coating.

Bak-4 Glass

The Prisms of the CRONUS are also designed using the high-end Bak-4 glass. In addition to that, CRONUS also enjoys the best phase correction technology.

Bonus Tips

More importantly, CRONUS comes with fully multi-coated lenses with anti-reflection coatings.  They also have hard exterior coatings, which protects them against any marking or scratching. Athlon refers to this coating as the XPL Coating, which stands for Xtra Protective Layer coating.

NOTE: This high end optics has its components properly protected within the Magnesium chassis. The chassis is water and fogproof and comes with small upgrades such as the lockable diopter ring for a detailed view.

Athlon Ares Binoculars

Not quite like the Cronus series is Athlon Ares series. This binocular also offers an incredible performance. It has every feature that the CRONUS has except for the field flattener lenses technology.

Even so, Athlon Ares still offers a wider field of view. This is why it has enjoyed some of the best reviews. A wider field of view is often cool for hunting, safari, and birding. However, there is a slight loss on the eye-relief and also the close focus distance.

Ares binoculars also enjoy the magnesium chassis. The design is, however, an open bridge design on the Ares unlike the closed design in the CRONUS.

The good thing about the open bridge is that you will enjoy a lightweight touch – so you can use the binoculars for longer. The open bridge design frees up additional barrels and provides a much more secure grip.

Athlon Midas Binoculars

The Athlon Midas Series Binocular may rank third, but trust me it is the one model you don’t want to miss out on.

It’s an interesting one if you asked me, and they will guarantee the best value for your money too. How so?

First, Midas Series has a chassis that’s made from magnesium alloy. This makes it waterproof. It is also filled with Argon gas, which is very good at protecting the inner optics from any fogging too.

The binocular uses the fully multi-coated optical technology to provide better images. It includes the, ED glass elements and the BaK-4 roof prisms.

More importantly, Midas uses both the dielectric coatings and the phase correction ones too. It also offers extra coatings for better protection on the binoculars outer lens surfaces.

TIP: Looking at the features that the Midas provides, you realize that you’re enjoying pretty much the features that Ares offers. These are same types of components for both brands but at a better bargain in the Midas.

So if you want to save some bucks and still enjoy better optic performance, I suggest trying these Athlon Midas Binoculars for a change.

Athlon Argos Binoculars

Argos is the next Mid-Range optics from Athlon. It is best if you are on a budget and is looking for high level components.

Argos offers better performance to the user and lowers the cost of production to the manufacturer too. It has substituted the magnesium chassis with a high end polycarbonate chassis. This is where this model has cut hug costs.

Unlike the magnesium that gives a robust touch, Argos offers a reliable build with the best lightweight touch. So you can carry the binoculars around for long.

As with the models above, Athlon Argus uses fully multi-coated lens technology. However, they don’t have the ED glass elements, which explain their lower price.

Nonetheless, this optics is still efficient and come with phase corrected Bak-4 prisms with dielectric coatings.

Models & Specs

Argos series also have the standard 42mm model. It has the semi-compact 34mm models and the large 50mm styles too. The 50mm models are good at offering improved brightness in low lit areas.

Athlon Talos Binoculars

The next Athlon Sports Optics Series is the Talos series. This series has six single-bridge systems and uses the roof prism design. It comes in various sizes and magnification powers.

The brand is relatively inexpensive and its main features are water resistance and the fog-proof polycarbonate body armor.

It is tripod adaptable and has twist-up eye-cups too. The series uses the large central focusing wheel and has a diopter adjustment knob on the right eye-piece.

All the Talos model binoculars come with fully multi-coated optics. They are also supported with the bak-4 roof prisms with phase correction.

However, they don’t come with the dielectric coatings nor do they offer an extra protection on the outer lens coatings. That explains their lower prices.

Models & Specs

Athlon Talos offer 32mm, 42mm and the larger 50mm sizes. Their magnification powers include 8x, 10x and 12x variations. Nonetheless, the Athlon Talos 8×32 binoculars has been rated by many as being one of the best. Thanks to its wide field. It is a darling to the birders.

Athlon Neos Binoculars

Athlon Optics Neos is the budget range binoculars. It consists of the roof and porro prism models. It also offers a variety of sizes and magnification powers. Unfortunately, these models cannot match the other high-end Athlon models in terms of quality.

The roof prism Neos use silver mirror coatings to maximize their transmittance. This is a good substitute for the lack of dielectric coatings that the expensive Athlon series use. For the price that this model comes with, it is not a bad feat.

Porro prism models, on the other hand, are the best options if you looking for a larger Athlon binocular model to move around with.

Interestingly, while the Neos models that have roof prisms are only multi-coated the remaining two Athlon Neos binoculars that have Porro Prism enjoy the fully multi-coated lens technology feature.

These two Porro Prism models, therefore, have their outer lens surfaces protected too. As if that’s not enough, every optic within Neos porro prism models also have the addition of anti-reflection coatings.

Then again, since porro prism technology doesn’t need reflective coating to achieve a total reflection, it is easy to get a much better light transmittance.

With that said, the best part about the Neos models is this. They all have polycarbonate bodies. They enjoy the o-ring sealing technology, which gives them a watertight touch. The optics is also filled with nitrogen gas for high for resistance touch.

Because they use twist-up eyecups they offer an improved performance.  They have a diopter adjuster on the right eye-piece and a centrally located focusing wheel. However, Porro prism models have their focusing knob set on the central bridge.

Models & Specs

Athlon Neos come in 42mm models and the mid-sized 32mm models. They have the 8x and 10x magnifications. The larger 50mm Neos use wither 10x or 12x powers and that’s why use conventional body shapes.
